Holmes Genealogy Research in Renfrewshire including, Kilmacom, Geenock, Kilbarchan, Houston, Kilellan

The following are my notes compiled while researching Holmes families in Ayrshire. I am sharing these in an effort to help other researchers. References are provided as to where I obtained the material. Much of the material are transcriptions of testamants. These are my best attempt to decipher the old Scottish script and are full of gaps (….) where I could not make out the text. Please forgive these and any errors.

1599—Sir James Cuninghame of Glengarnock, who was served heir to his grandfather in August this year (MS.) On 9th January, 1601, he is retoured heir to his father in the 44s. land of old extent of Crawfield, in the parish of Beith. On 15 th December, in that year, he appears as one of the prolocutors for William Cuninghame of Tourlands, in a charge of treason, keeping of the house of Cuninghamehead against the King’s Commissioners; and slaughter. On 15th June, 1602, he is indicted as art and part of the slaughter of William Cuningham in Walzard, on which occasion the Laird of Houston is one of his prolocutors, which shews that one of the family feuds had been staunched. From a MS. pedigree of the Porterfield family, it appears that William Porterfield of that Ilk married Isobel, daughter of John Cuninghame of Glengarnock. His brother-in-law, James Cuninghame of Glengarnock, took part with him in a feud with his own chief, the Earl of Glencairn, which gave rise to the trial now alluded to. William Cuninghame, a tenant of Porterfield’s, in the parish of Innerkip, having been poinded for rent, made some resistance, and fled to Finlaystoun for protection. Sometime afterwards he, with some others sent out out by James, Master of Glencairn, fell upon Alexander, son of Porterfield, in the kirkyard of Kilmalcolm, after sermon, but were so warmly handled by him and his servant, of the name of Holm, that they lied back to Finlaystoun for shelter. The Laird of Glengarnock having occasion, a little after this, to visit his chief, and seeing this William Cuninghame amongst Glencairn’s attendants, ordered some of his followers to kill him, which they did immediately. It was for being art and part in this murder that the Laird of Glengarnock was brought to trial; but, after some delay and protesting, the case seems to have been abandoned in the usual manner. (Cuninghame, Topographized, by Timothy Pont, Glasgow, 1876, p.177)
