Other Information:
This is in the townland of Ballylessan, on the Belfast-Hillhall-Lisburn road The oldest stone dates from 1783 and 19 have been copied in Memorials of the Dead (MD), X, 9 of which most are still extant All the registers of the parish date from 1791, that is, from shortly after lhe present church was built in 1788 Most of the eighteenth century burials of the parish were in the graveyard beside the present Presbyterian Church See “The History of Drumbo Presbyterian Church” by J B Wallace, Drumbo, 1937. The following inscriptions in two high-railed enclosures formerly covered with earth, ivy and weeds, were missed when the inscriptions were copied for Graveyard Inscriptions, County Down, 1966, Volume 1 and for the supplementary inscriptions in Volume 18 They were found and copied by Mr J Fred Rankin for his article on Michael Thomas Sadler in the Lisburn Historical Society Journal, 1984, Volume 5, 42-50. (ADDENDA) OS 9 Ref 330673. Here are recorded the inscriptions with dates of death between 1865 and 1899, further to the main transcription in Volume 1 The most noteworthy stones include one to Robert Narcissus Batt who died in 1891, the last male member of the Batts to live at Purdysburn House There is also a very attractive stone to Macmahon with an anchor and rope carved in high relief, doubly unusual in being in an inland graveyard This graveyard contains an unusual number of named marker stones, probably of the period 1880-1920 It was felt that these were of sufficient value to include The graveyard is unfortunate in being on a steep slope and some of the graves are as unkempt and derelict as they were when first visited 15 years ago. All stones with dates of death before 1865 have been copied as well as the memorial tablets in the Church prior to this date The graveyard is very uneven and many of the old enclosures densely overgrown. In the Church are two tablets not strictly memorial On the south wall of the south transept,-AD 1863 The chancel and this transept were erected by the landlords and parishioners, aided by a grant from the Ecclesiastical Commissioners of Ireland, Horatio Maunsell, AM, Rector Thomas Gray, James S Bell, Churchwardens Deo Optimo Maximo. On the north wall of the north transept/-This tablet is erected in grateful remembrance of the beneficence of the late Robert Batt of Purdysburn, Esqr and Mrs Calwell of Belvidere in building at their joint expense this north transept to enlarge and beautify their parish church to the Glory of God and for the benefit of the parishioners Horatio Maunsell, A,M, Rector Wm Moore, Josh Carson, Church wardens.”

HOLMES, BRUCE
Inscription
Erected by James Holmes in memory of his father Samuel Holmes who died 8th May 1840 aged 55 years Also his mother Mary BRUCE who died 21st May 1866 aged 78 years Also his brother Jonathan who died 24th October 1881 aged 59 years Also three of his children, James aged 1 year & 4 mons Jonathan aged 2 years & 8 mons , Mary aged 1 years & 4 mons.
Other Information: The old church and graveyard are situated in the direct line of the Belfast-Bangor road at the north-east end of Holywood A church probably existed on this site since the 7th century and the place was known as Sanctus Boscus in the early 13th century when the present church was built The cast window and western end were added in the 15th century and the western windows of the nave modified in the 17th to be blocked when the church was abandoned In one of the windows has been inserted a 13th century coffin lid in good preservation with a pair of shears to the left of the cross The church belonged to Franciscan Friars during the 15th-16th centuries but they were expelled in 1541 In 1572 Sir Brian O’Neill burned it down to prevent its being used by the English However, it was repaired before 1622 and used as the parish church until the present Church of Ireland building was erected in 1843 The old parish registers were destroyed in Dublin and all now date from after civil registration The First Presbyterian church registers date from 1846 (marriage) and 1856 (baptism) and Second Presbyterian registers from 1858 (marriage) and 1857 (baptism) Roman Catholic registers date from 1866/7 Part of O’Laverty’s “History of the Diocese of Down and Connor” was reprinted with an appendix as “The History of the Parish of Holywood” There is also a “History of Bangor Road Presbyterian Church, Holywood” by Thomas Bruce, Belfast, 1909 Other old churches existed in the parish at Ballymaghan and Craigavad and though the churches disappeared centuries ago the graveyards were in use until 1765 (Lewis) In the former 2 Anglo-Norman coffin lids were found, now in the Ulster Museum. It is also celebrated as the possible burial place of Con O’Neill The graveyard is densely packed but well kept All the stones with dates of death prior to 1865 have been copied and all but two of these (Brett and Dunville) are in the area surrounding the church between the west gate and the first crosg-path Within this area, however, eighteenth century stones are widely scattered except that there were no recorded burials inside the church until it became disused The walls inside the roofiess church are covered with memorial tablets of the mid-nineteenth century In recent years all the stones in the south-west corner of the graveyard were laid flat and the wall lowered to improve visibility for motorists This has resulted in much weathering and a few stones have been badly damaged in the process The oldest date of death recorded is 1645 but the name is largely unreadable. Volume 4, p 24 Introduction The parish registers were not all destroyed in Dublin and those dating from 1806 are in local custody Baptisms 1806-73, marriages 1826-56 and burials 1823-93 are available on microfilm in the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland.
